How to Link Your Credit Card to UPI for Scanning QR Codes

A step-by-step guide to linking RuPay Credit Cards to UPI apps and using them to pay merchants by scanning QR codes.

Historically, UPI could only be linked to Savings and Current bank accounts. However, the RBI and NPCI recently enabled credit card linking on the UPI network, specifically for RuPay Credit Cards.

This feature allows you to make credit-based payments simply by scanning a merchant’s UPI QR code. Here is how to set it up.

Which Credit Cards are Supported?

Currently, only RuPay network credit cards issued by partner banks (including HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Axis, Punjab National Bank, and Union Bank) can be linked to UPI. Visa and Mastercard credit cards do not support UPI linking at this time.

  1. Open your preferred UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or Cred).
  2. Tap on your Profile Picture and select Add Payment Method or Link Credit Card.
  3. Choose Credit Card on UPI from the list of options.
  4. Select the bank that issued your RuPay Credit Card.
  5. The app will fetch your card details linked to your registered mobile number.
  6. Verify your card by entering the last 6 digits of the card number and the expiry date.
  7. Set a secure 4 or 6-digit UPI PIN for the card.

How to Pay Scanning a QR Code

Once linked, paying is simple:

  1. Scan any merchant UPI QR code.
  2. Enter the transaction amount.
  3. On the payment options screen, change the active payment source from your Bank Account to your RuPay Credit Card.
  4. Enter your UPI PIN to authorize the credit transaction.

Note: You can only scan merchant UPI QR codes (P2M) using credit cards. P2P transfers (sending money to friends or personal accounts) are not allowed using credit card funds.
