The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is no longer restricted to India. Through the international arm of NPCI (NIPL), India is actively integrating its instant payment system with foreign nations.

If you are traveling abroad, you can now pay merchants in several countries directly using your Indian UPI apps. Here is the updated countries list.

Active Countries Supporting UPI Payments

Indian travelers can scan local QR codes and pay via UPI in the following countries:

  1. Nepal: Widely supported across retail and merchant stores linked to the local Fonepay network.
  2. Singapore: Integrated with SGQR codes. You can pay at selected merchant outlets.
  3. UAE (United Arab Emirates): Supported across retail outlets, supermarkets, and tourist locations connected to the Mashreq bank network.
  4. Mauritius: Fully integrated. Indian tourists can scan local QR codes to make payments.
  5. Sri Lanka: Recently launched. Allows scanning of local QR networks using Indian bank apps.
  6. France: Accepted at selected locations, starting with the iconic Eiffel Tower.

How to Activate UPI International on Your Phone

Before traveling, you must enable international payments inside your UPI app:

  1. Open GPay, PhonePe, or BHIM.
  2. Tap on your Profile Settings.
  3. Locate UPI International or International Payments.
  4. Select the bank account you wish to activate.
  5. Enter your UPI PIN to confirm the activation.

Note: International UPI transactions are active for a maximum of 90 days per activation for security reasons. Foreign exchange rates and minor conversion fees set by your bank will apply to these transactions.
