What is IMPS?
Immediate Payment Service · इमीडिएट पेमेंट सर्विस
NPCI's instant account-to-account transfer service — the predecessor UPI built upon.
IMPS launched in 2010 and was India's first 24×7 instant transfer rail. It works with beneficiary account number + IFSC instead of a VPA, making it the fallback choice where UPI fails or for transfers above UPI per-transaction limits.
IMPS currently allows up to ₹5 lakh per transaction. Unlike UPI, banks may charge a small fee (typically ₹2.50–₹25 by slab), and the payer needs the recipient's actual banking coordinates.
