What is Revenue Stamp?

Fiscal Revenue Stamp · रेवेन्यू स्टैम्प

The ₹1 stamp affixed and signed on certain paper acknowledgements — famously required on cash rent receipts of ₹5,000+.

Indian stamp law expects a revenue stamp on receipts for cash payments of ₹5,000 or more, signed by (or for) the payee. The physical stamp converts paper into stamped evidence; digital transfers sidestep the requirement because the bank trail itself proves payment.

Practical workflow: buy sheets of stamps from stationers or post offices, affix one inside the dedicated box, sign across it partially. HRA submissions and landlord records are where tenants encounter this relic most often.
