UPI ID generator: name ideas and a format check

Only a UPI app or your bank can set up a UPI ID, so no website can create one for you. This page suggests well-formed names, checks how an ID is written and shows which app each handle belongs to.

Format check only. This does not show that a UPI ID exists or who owns it: your UPI app shows the payee name before you pay. Independent tool, not affiliated with NPCI or any UPI app or bank (see the disclaimer).

Check how a UPI ID is written

Type a UPI ID such as name@okicici.

This checks the written format only. It cannot tell whether an ID exists or who owns it, and nothing you type leaves your browser. Apps can be stricter about length and symbols. If your app rejects a name, try plain letters and digits.

Ideas for a new UPI ID

Add your name in English letters to see ideas.

These are examples only. Your UPI app decides whether an ID is free when you register it, so try another if it is taken. Paytm and Google Pay show a list of IDs to pick from, so a typed name only helps in apps that ask for one. An ID built from your mobile number shows that number to everyone you give the ID to.

Where to find or add your UPI ID

A website cannot create a UPI ID. Your UPI app does, after you link your bank account in it. NPCI describes an ID as a part you choose before the @ and a handle after it that the app sets.

Do not count on editing an existing ID: Paytm says it cannot be edited, and Google Pay lets you delete an ID and add another. To change your ID, add the one you want and use that.

  • Google PayTap your photo, then Bank account, pick the account and open Manage UPI IDs. Next to the ID you want, tap Add. You can have up to 4 IDs per bank account and delete one from its three-dot menu.
  • PaytmTap your profile icon, then UPI & Payment Settings and the UPI ID section. Paytm does not let you type an ID: you pick one of the options it generates for your account and can set it as primary.
  • PhonePeTap your profile picture and look for your UPI IDs. PhonePe says users can use more than one ID, on its @ybl, @ibl and @axl handles.
  • Any UPI appLook for the line that starts with UPI ID on the home screen or on your profile page below your QR code. NPCI's guidelines ask apps to show it there.

Steps checked against the sources below on 1 November 2026. Menus change between app versions. If yours looks different, search the app's help for UPI ID.

Happy with the ID? Turn it into a printable QR on the next page. You will type the ID there again; nothing from this page is passed on.

In full: it suggests well-formed names from your name or shop name, checks that an ID you already have is written correctly, shows which app and bank each handle belongs to, and points you to where your apps keep your IDs.

How it works

Three steps

  1. Check the format. Type a UPI ID and fix anything the checker flags.
  2. Pick a name idea. Enter your name or shop name, choose a handle and copy an example ID.
  3. Add the ID in your UPI app. Follow the app steps in the tool above. The app confirms whether the name is free.

What this does and does not do

It does

  • Check how a UPI ID is written and say what to fix.
  • Suggest well-formed names from a name or shop name and an optional mobile number.
  • Show which app and bank each handle belongs to, with the source and the review date.
  • Hand your ID and name to this site's QR generator when you press the button.

It does not

  • Create, reserve or change a UPI ID. Only your UPI app or bank can.
  • Show whether an ID exists, who owns it or whether a payment would go through.
  • Contact any app, bank or NPCI, or send what you type to a server.
  • Save anything: no draft of your ID or name is kept in your browser.

Handle guide

UPI handles and who issues them

The handle is the part after the @. The app sets it, so it tells you which app and bank an ID was made through. Checked 1 November 2026.

Where a source names only the app, the bank is the one in the handle's name. @paytm is an older Paytm handle: Paytm's terms say existing @paytm handles were assigned to Yes Bank from 15 March 2024, and Paytm says IDs are being updated to @pthdfc, @ptaxis, @ptsbi or @ptyes. The list is not exhaustive: banks and apps add and retire handles, and SEBI's list of UPI apps alone shows many more, such as @idbi, @aubank and @icici. A handle that is not here is not wrong.

Where these facts come from

The handle table, the app steps and the rules quoted on this page come from pages published by NPCI, SEBI or the apps themselves, read on 1 November 2026. Where a page could not be opened or two pages disagreed, the claim was left out rather than guessed. Apps change menus and handles without notice, so your app has the final say.

FAQ

UPI ID questions

Can this page create a UPI ID for me?

No. A UPI ID exists only after your UPI app or bank sets it up against your bank account, and only that app can tell you whether a name is free. This page suggests well-formed names, checks how an ID is written and shows where each app keeps your IDs.

What is a UPI ID, or VPA?

A UPI ID, also called a Virtual Payment Address, is the address people pay, written like name@okicici or 9876543210@ybl. NPCI's app guidelines describe it as two parts: a prefix you can customise and a suffix, the handle, that the app sets. People can pay you with it instead of your bank account details.

How do I get a UPI ID?

Install a UPI app such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm or BHIM, use the mobile number linked to your bank account and add that account. The app then gives you an ID. How much say you have depends on the app: Paytm does not let you type an ID and offers a list, Google Pay lists IDs for the account and you tap Add, and other apps may let you type the part before the @. For another ID on the same account, follow the app steps in the tool above.

Can this page tell me whether a UPI ID exists or whose it is?

No. It only checks how an ID is written. Your UPI app shows the payee name before you confirm a payment, so check the name there. To read the ID inside a QR code, use the UPI QR decoder.

Which handle will I get: @ybl, @oksbi or @ptyes?

The app you use sets the handle, and it follows the app and the bank behind it. @ybl, @ibl and @axl are PhonePe's, @okhdfcbank, @okicici, @oksbi and @okaxis are Google Pay's, and Paytm's terms name @ptyes, @pthdfc, @ptsbi and @ptaxis for new IDs. Any UPI app can pay an ID on any handle, so the handle does not change who can pay you. An ID belongs to the app that made it: Google Pay says IDs from other apps cannot be used in Google Pay.

Is the older @paytm handle still used?

Paytm's terms say all existing @paytm handles were assigned to Yes Bank from 15 March 2024, and Paytm says it is updating IDs from @paytm to @pthdfc, @ptaxis, @ptsbi or @ptyes. Open the Paytm app to see which ID it shows for you.

What characters can a UPI ID contain?

NPCI's public guidelines define only the two parts, a prefix you choose and a handle the app sets, and apps add their own rules for length and symbols. This checker flags only clear problems: spaces, anything other than exactly one @, nothing before or after the @, and characters other than letters, digits, dot, hyphen and underscore. If your app rejects a name that passes here, follow the app. This site's QR generator is stricter: it needs at least 2 characters before the @ and a letters-only handle.

How many UPI IDs can I have?

More than one, and the limit comes from the app. Google Pay allows up to 4 IDs for each bank account you add. Paytm's terms let one bank account carry several handles, and PhonePe says its users can use more than one ID across its handles. An ID belongs to the app that made it, so using a second app means a second ID.

Is it risky to share my UPI ID?

Sharing it is how people pay you: NPCI's app guidelines describe receiving money by sharing your UPI ID, and the ID is used in place of bank account details. Never share your UPI PIN or an OTP. NPCI's checklist for apps says only sending money needs the PIN, so a request to enter your PIN to receive money is a warning sign. An ID built from your mobile number shows that number to everyone who sees the ID.
