What is BHIM?

NPCI's own minimal UPI app, launched December 2016 as the reference implementation.
BHIM is the Government-backed UPI app built directly by NPCI, deliberately stripped of cashback offers, ads, and extra services. It exists so that every Indian has a clean, trustworthy path to UPI even if third-party apps feel bloated or untrustworthy.
Functionally it does what PhonePe or GPay do: scan QRs, send/receive by VPA, pay bills. Many merchants keep BHIM installed purely as a neutral second app for verifying that their counter QR works across ecosystems.

Is BHIM safer than PhonePe or GPay?
All UPI apps operate under identical NPCI security rules. BHIM feels simpler because it does less; safety depends more on your own habits than the app choice.
Can my customers use any app to pay my QR?
Yes — UPI QRs are interoperable. A standee generated once works identically in every UPI app.
