UPI QR Code Not Scanning? 12 Fixes for Shop Owners

When a customer says “QR not working,” the problem is usually physical print quality or lighting — not UPI itself. Work through this list from fastest fix to full reprint.

Quick Fixes (Try First)

1. Wipe the standee — grease and fingerprints block cameras.
2. Tilt away from ceiling LED — glare from glossy laminate is the #1 scan killer. Switch to matte.
3. Increase phone brightness — ask the customer to raise screen brightness (helps their camera, not yours, but often works).
4. Try a second app — test with Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
5. Move standee closer — if QR is under 2 cm, customers cannot scan from across the counter.

Data and App Problems

• Invalid VPA: QR encodes wrong UPI ID — regenerate from bank-confirmed VPA.
• Amount too long: Very large am values or special characters in tn can break some older apps — simplify the note field.
• Pending payments: If payment hangs after scan, see resolve UPI pending transactions.
• Customer on old app version: Ask them to update GPay/PhonePe.

Counter Placement Tips

• Place QR at chest height, facing the customer.
• Avoid glass reflections directly behind the QR.
• For outdoor stalls, use waterproof sticker guidance.
• At night markets, add a small LED on the standee — not on the QR surface.

When to Reprint Entirely

Reprint if:

• You changed bank account or UPI ID.
• Fraudster sticker was found on your standee.
• QR module is scratched through lamination.
