Payment QR code generator for shops and freelancers

Make a payment QR code from your UPI ID so customers can pay you cashless, then decide where it goes: the counter, a table, an invoice or a WhatsApp chat.

This page is for UPI payments in India: the payer scans with a UPI app and pays in rupees. It is not for card, PayPal or international payments. This is an independent tool, not from NPCI, a bank or a UPI app: see the disclaimer.

Below the generator, a short guide compares a QR you print yourself with a bank-issued merchant QR and a soundbox, so you pick the right one for the job.

How it works

How to make a payment QR code for your shop

  1. Enter your UPI ID and business name

Copy your UPI ID from your UPI or bank app, paste it into the UPI ID box and type your shop or business name.

  2. Pick a layout and add an amount if needed

Switch to Advanced Poster to choose a layout such as shop standee, restaurant table or freelancer card, and open Add amount & note (optional) for an amount or an invoice number.

  3. Generate, test and place it

Click Generate UPI QR, scan it from a second phone and read the payee details, then download it to print, share or add to an invoice.

Pick the right one

Which payment QR do you need?

Three things get called a payment QR in a shop. They do different jobs, and the facts below are the ones that differ.

A QR printed from your UPI ID

What this page makes

What it is
A standard UPI QR that holds your UPI ID and name and, if you add them, an amount and a note.
Set-up
None beyond having a UPI ID. You make it in your browser.
What you get
Payments go from the payer's bank account to the account behind your UPI ID. There is no dashboard, report or speaker with it.
Fits
Counters, tables, fees and invoices where checking your bank or UPI app for credits is enough.

A merchant QR from a bank, payment app or aggregator

Issued by a provider

What it is
A QR issued once a provider has onboarded you as a merchant. NPCI's brand guidelines call the acquiring bank, payee PSP or payment aggregator that directly onboards the merchant a partner.
Set-up
An application with the provider. The steps differ by provider.
What you get
A sticker or display in the provider's layout. NPCI's guidelines for these stickers call for the UPI ID as text, the line “Scan & Pay with any UPI app” and the month of issue. The provider may add reports or devices.
Fits
When you want what the provider adds, such as reports or a device, or a QR that carries the provider's branding.

A soundbox

A device, usually with a QR on it

What it is
A small speaker that announces payments. NPCI's brand guidelines give soundbox QR stickers their own layouts.
Set-up
From the provider you buy or rent it from, linked to your account with that provider.
What you get
A spoken alert when a payment arrives on that account. It is an alert, not a record: your bank statement is the record.
Fits
Noisy counters, or shops where staff take payments and you are not at the till.

A QR printed from your own UPI ID is enough when all you need is for customers to pay into an account you already have. Personal accounts come with bank limits, so look at bank-wise UPI limits before you rely on one for heavy volume. A provider's QR is worth a look when you want its reports or devices. A soundbox announces payments that arrive through its provider's merchant account, so it usually goes with that provider's QR: a QR printed from your UPI ID still collects money, but the speaker may not announce it. The soundbox glossary entry and the guide to how soundboxes work cover the device side.

To set up a provider's merchant QR, start with the merchant setup hub. It links the guides for PhonePe Business, Google Pay for Business, a bank-issued QR and a comparison of the three apps.

Placement

Where to put your payment QR

At the counter

Put it where customers already stand or wait, at a height a phone can reach. Print your shop name and UPI ID as text above or below the QR: NPCI's own sticker layouts show the UPI ID that way. NPCI's layout rules for provider-issued stickers also say no other QR codes or stickers go beside the payment QR, and the habit keeps customers from scanning the wrong code. Check now and then that nothing has been stuck over yours: see the tampering guide.

On a table

A table tent or counter card suits cafes and restaurants. In Advanced Poster the Restaurant Table layout has a field for a table number, but that label is only printed on the poster. If you want the table number to arrive with the payment, put it in the note field as well.

On an invoice

Enter the amount and put the invoice number in the note, so the client pays the exact total and you can match it later. The invoice generator builds the PDF with a payment QR in it, so you do not have to paste images.

On WhatsApp or Instagram

Share the downloaded PNG, or post it on a status or in your bio. Someone looking at the QR on the phone they pay with cannot scan it with that phone's camera, so for a single customer in a chat a payment link is often easier: you can make a UPI payment link instead. The social sharing guide has more.

No gateway

Collecting without a payment gateway

A UPI QR takes payments straight into your bank account through the customer's UPI app. There is no checkout page, no card option and no automatic order matching, which are the things a payment gateway provides. That makes a QR a good fit for a counter or for a client you invoice yourself, and a weak fit for an online store that needs each order confirmed automatically. The QR code versus gateway guide compares the two.

What a UPI payment costs a merchant depends on rules that change, so this page quotes no figure. Use the UPI MDR calculator for the current merchant discount rules and the UPI savings calculator to compare UPI with a gateway for your own sales mix.

Printing

Choose a layout in Advanced Poster: shop standee, restaurant table, freelancer card and more. The print template gallery lists paper sizes for counter cards and table tents, and the QR sticker generator fills an A4 sheet with several small codes. Print your business name, your UPI ID and the month you printed it, so an old or swapped sticker is easy to spot, and scan a printed proof from where customers will stand before you make a batch.

Before you put a printed code up, scan the proof on your phone with the UPI QR scanner to see the UPI ID and name it holds.

Freelancers

Invoices with a payment QR

For one client and one amount, put the amount in the QR and the invoice number in the note. If you invoice often, the invoice generator builds the whole PDF for you. A UPI QR does not help a client who pays from abroad: for those invoices use another currency and a payment link, which the same generator supports.

After payment

Receipts once you have been paid

A receipt records a payment that has already reached your account. Use the receipt generator only for money you have received, and keep your bank statement, which is the record. A receipt made here is not a bank or UPI-app record.

Scope

What this tool does and does not do

It does

  • Print a standard UPI QR for a UPI ID you already have.
  • Offer poster layouts and a PNG download, made in your browser.
  • Carry an optional amount and note, such as an invoice number.

It does not

  • Make you a merchant with a bank or provider, or add a dashboard or soundbox.
  • Confirm that a customer has paid. Your bank or UPI app shows the credit.
  • Take card or international payments, or send, receive or hold money.

Sources and method

Where these facts come from

What this page says about partner-issued stickers and soundbox layouts is read from NPCI's guidelines document. The placement and printing advice is our own, not an NPCI requirement. This page quotes no fee, because merchant charges change: use the calculators linked above. We have not test-scanned every UPI app, so scan your QR with the apps your customers use.

FAQ

Payment QR code questions

What is a payment QR code?

For shops and freelancers in India it is usually a UPI QR: a code that opens the customer's UPI app with your UPI ID and name filled in, and sometimes an amount. Other kinds of payment QR exist, such as card-network codes, but this page covers UPI only.

Which should my shop use: a printed UPI QR, a bank merchant QR or a soundbox?

They do different jobs. A QR printed from your UPI ID takes payments into that account with no set-up. A merchant QR from a bank, payment app or aggregator comes with that provider's onboarding and whatever else it offers, such as reports or a device. A soundbox is a speaker that announces payments on its provider's account, so it works with that provider's QR.

Do I need a payment gateway to accept QR payments?

No. A UPI QR takes payments into your bank account through the customer's UPI app. A gateway adds things a QR does not, such as a hosted checkout, card payments and automatic order confirmation, so an online store usually needs one. What UPI costs a merchant depends on rules that change, so use the UPI MDR calculator for current figures.

How do I know a customer has paid?

Look for the credit in your own bank or UPI app, or for the alert from your soundbox. Treat a customer's screen or a screenshot as unconfirmed until the credit shows in your account. Putting an invoice or order number in the note makes the payment easier to match later.

Can I use one QR for several counters or staff?

One QR credits one UPI ID, so several counters can share it. To tell them apart, make a separate QR for each counter with the counter number in the note, and match those notes in your statement if your bank or app shows them.

How do I put an amount or an invoice number in the QR?

Switch to Advanced Poster, open Add amount & note and fill in the amount and a note such as the invoice number. Each different amount needs its own QR; the invoice generator makes one for you inside the PDF.

Can customers from outside India pay with this QR?

This page is for UPI payments in India: amounts are in rupees and payers use UPI apps. If a client pays from abroad, bill in their currency with a payment link instead; the invoice generator can issue invoices in other currencies.

Is this the same QR that my bank or a payment app gives me?

No. This tool prints a standard UPI QR for a UPI ID you already have. It does not make you a merchant with a bank or provider, and it comes with no dashboard, settlement report or soundbox. It is an independent tool, not from NPCI, a bank or any UPI app.
